A lot of students are scammed each year by going to websites that look professionally done and which state that they can obtain their degree or diploma through online distance learning courses. The sites contain many testimonials and statistics and they sway those students that are eager to continue their education.

A lot of the websites are covers for degree or diploma mills. A degree or diploma from an unaccredited institution or mill will not help you advance when you apply for a real job or try to transfer credits. It is good to know what to look for in these programs so that you can avoid all the scams.

Genuine online distance learning courses must be accredited. The Department of Education recognizes 6 regional accreditation agencies. There are schools that are not accredited by these agencies and they claim to have recognition from the state or accreditation. Look at the sites where you get a ton of emails. A lot of these sites make you register before any important information is accessed. Then you are spammed with information begging you to enroll. Take this as a red flag. Reputable universities and colleges don’t beg students to enroll; they turn away students. It is good to double check any college or university that has a similar sounding name to a legitimate university. Scammers are aware how students are eager to get degrees from high end universities and they make the names similar to them. Do your homework before you submit any personal information to them.

Be careful of schools that claim they are international. A lot of times the schools have no permanent phone number or address and you can’t contact them if there are problems. They have no degrees that have value in the workplace. It is always a good idea to find a school located in the country you live in. There are many online distance learning schools that are legitimate but you have to do careful research before deciding to go with one of them.
